A Place Built for Careful Looking

Gotong Group exists to give thoughtful adults a well-organised space to examine their financial position — not to be sold something, but to understand it better.

Our Story

Gotong Royong, Applied to Learning

The name Gotong Group draws from the Malay tradition of gotong royong — a collective effort toward something that benefits the community. When a few of us sat down in 2018 to think about what was missing in Singapore's financial education landscape, that word kept returning. What people in their late working years often lacked was not access to products but a shared, unhurried space to think clearly about where they stood.

We were educators, planners, and former financial professionals who had spent years watching capable, experienced adults navigate the run-up to retirement with too little time and too much noise. CPF rules had grown more layered. Housing arrangements had grown more complex. The gap between useful, neutral information and product-driven sales material had widened considerably. There was a space worth filling.

Our first course went out to a small group of participants in early 2019 — twelve people who had asked for something they described as "just enough to know what questions to ask." The feedback shaped nearly everything we have built since. The courses are not shorter versions of professional advice. They are a step that comes before that advice, making those conversations more useful.

We remain a small operation by design. Our team is Singapore-based, the content is written for Singapore's specific regulatory and social landscape, and the pace of our materials is set by the reader, not by a schedule. We direct participants to MAS-licensed advisers and qualified lawyers for personal decisions. Our role is the preparation, not the prescription.

Mission

What We Are Here to Do

To give adults in Singapore's 40-plus generation a well-structured, non-pressured way to understand their own financial position — and to move into the next chapter with greater clarity about what they have, what they may need, and what they would like to do with both.

Clarity

We write in plain language and explain every term. The goal is always to help the reader see their situation more clearly.

Respect

Adults arriving at mid-life carry decades of lived experience. Our materials speak to that experience, not past it.

Integrity

We sell educational content. We have no affiliated product providers and receive no referral fees.

Each cohort is asked for feedback at the end of each module. Material is revised based on questions and confusions that recur across participants.

Our Approach

Financial Education Shaped Around Singapore Life

Adults who have spent twenty or thirty years building a working life in Singapore arrive at mid-life with a specific financial landscape: a CPF account that has been accumulating for decades, a home that may carry both equity and outstanding obligations, insurance policies taken out under different circumstances, and investment arrangements made over many different market conditions. The knowledge needed to review this landscape is equally specific.

Gotong Group's courses are built on that specificity. The household balance-sheet approach used in Course One reflects Singapore's asset structure. The CPF milestone review in Course Two walks through the 55 and 65 decisions that apply to Singapore residents. The withdrawal planning in Course Three addresses CPF LIFE, MediShield Life, and Integrated Shield Plan premiums as they actually work in this country — not as approximations of how similar structures work elsewhere.

Beyond the financial mechanics, the courses pay attention to the personal dimensions that shape this life stage: family care responsibilities that may affect cash flow, housing arrangements that involve more than one generation, and the shift in daily structure that retirement often brings. These are not minor considerations. They are often what people most need to think through carefully.
